Online Preschool Teacher Training
The International Preschool Curriculum (IPC) and College of Teaching have unveiled a certification course for preschool teacher training. The IPC Teaching Certificate is a six month course designed to offer existing and aspiring early childhood teachers with an in-depth overview of major teaching methods. As an online course, students can begin learning immediately and have up to one year to complete the course.
The certificate is awarded after the successful completion of all seven modules. Students are required to submit assessments at the end of each module and may complete the course within a six month period. Many students are able to complete sooner, should they be able to satisfactorily submit their work for all seven modules before the suggested six month period. With the possibility of learning through a smart phone, the course is also accessible to nearly every possible setting. Some teachers may even conduct assessments while on lunch.
The course is widely seen as one of the best value for money options. The full course costs only $250 and includes teacher support, facilitator training by phone or email and an interactive forum which operates much like a social network. The course is designed by an ex teaching fellow of Harvard University and offers a wide overview of all teaching strategies required by established teaching standards. By offering the course at a reduced price, it is hoped that teachers in more deprived parts of the world will have an opportunity to be fully trained and better prepared for a preschool environment.
The College of Teaching also offers a new media approach to learning and operates as a social network as well as a learning management platform. Students can share information, assist others and ask questions. The platform is designed to be extremely interactive and user friendly. There are many benefits to online learning that are not always clearly understood by prospective College of Teaching students. For instance, there is no time restriction on when you start and complete a particular lecture. A student may theoretically complete an assessment during their lunch hour, using their smart phone.
The IPC course includes seven modules ranging from child growth and development to parent involvement. There are also several professional development continuing education units (CEU) provided by the IPC at no extra cost. Once members join the course, they are free to participate in all courses on offer by the College of Teaching. Although the course facilitators recommend text books for optimal learning, students are capable of completing the course with the assistance of freely available resources on the internet and academic journals.
