Seven Fraternity Recruitment Event Ideas

by Carolina Herrera

Follow these three keys to help you during fraternity recruitment:

Being in a fraternity is all about the relationships you have, so don't forget about that during recruitment. Are you the fraternity on your campus that spends forever giving out 40 bids and you only get 15 guys?

You had great parties and a ton of supportive sorority women. You have a good reputation, but your recruits seem torn between a few chapters?

Three - Mix with a sorority. Think about it. An event with a lot of girls (normally the prettiest girls on campus) is sure to attract a lot of guys. Also, it will be a ton of fun for all your brothers. This is a no brainer for a great recruitment event.

Four - Do something athletic. Fraternity athletics are important. You obviously want to recruit to get better, more athletic brothers. Play hoops or play football to figure out which one of your recruits are good athletes.

When I was an undergraduate, we had a big problem in this area one semester. We had our biggest rush event that fall and had a lot of new guys out to the house. We collected all their information and kept it in a binder.

After the rush event no one could find the binder. To make a long story short we lost the binder and lost the contact information of about 50 guys. What a waste.

Seven - Have a smoker. Buy a bunch of cigars, and then smoke them while telling great stories of the fraternity's past. Let the recruits as questions about the fraternity, and encourage open dialogue. This is a quick way to get the potential new members to bond with the brothers.

These seven events are easy to pull off, and are great ways to recruit new members. Keep in mind that there are a lot of things that are just as, if not more, important in fraternity recruitment than just having great events.

This was actually a tactic that I used for good success as an undergraduate. I found out that one recruit was a golf nut. I was a golf nut so I took him out to play golf. It wasn't a rush event, just a couple guys going to play golf. The beauty of it was we spent 4 hours together on the course getting to know each other. The guy would end up becoming my little brother in the fraternity and would become fraternity president one day.
